Good Morning All,
I have a 93 Ranger 4.0 4X4. My trusted steed has a bit of a transmission problem so I want to swap it out. As it says in the title it is a M5OD-R1. Now I have a friend that has the same trans out of his truck that was just rebuilt BUT his is only a 2WD. So my question is if taking mine out can I use his and transfer my rear transfer unit to his with out any real issues. Is there anything I need to know in order to accomplish this or should I just find a trans out of a 4 X 4 truck. Thanks in advance for your input it's appreciated

First the other M5OD-R1 needs to be from a 4.0l engine, or a 2.9l, otherwise it won't fit your 4.0l.
M5OD-R1 from 3.0l or 2.3l won't work, bellhousing is not detachable on these transmissions

And yes if your 4WD tail shaft and housing are not the problem with trans then you can swap them over to the other M5OD-R1, although it is not an "easy" swap.

M5OD-R1 from 4.0l 4WD would be plug and play.
Remember M5OD-R1 uses ATF not gear oil

Thanks Ron,
Both trucks are 4.0 so I know the trans are the same with the exception of one is 2WD and mine is 4X4. And mine the problem is in the 4th gear as, well for a better explanation, there isn't any !!! LOL So if I were to use his Id need to swap out the rear output shaft and then I would be able to replace the tail shaft housing with my transfer case unit ??? Am I correct in my assumption ???

Thanks

Yes, but..............

The way 4th gear works, or any manual trans 1:1 ratio gear, is it connects input shaft directly to output shaft, so not really a "gear".
I have not rebuilt an M5OD-R1 but have done other manuals.

Picture in post #4 here: http://www.fordrangerforum.com/drivetrain-tech/20252-ford-m5od-r1-rebuild.html

Shows tail shaft for 2WD(it has speedo worm gear, so 2WD) I am not sure if output shaft problem causing loss of 4th gear would effect it
