Steering knuckles

Would the steering knuckles on a 97 Dana 35, be the same as on an 87 Dana 28? I have a crack through one of the lug holes in my drivers side, it's the 35. I can't find a replacement anywhere! Might try to go look at some off of a 28, but don't know if they'd be the same or not. Anything, anybody could tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Nope, and I believe that the 97 has a different knuckle than even the earlier d35's because the brakes are dual piston callipers and attach tot he knuckle differently. I also think that the 98 is different because Ford switched to IFS style front suspension in 98. so you might be looking around for a bit or getting it from Ford (if it is still available)

you might have to widen your search radius a bit...

The 87 knuckle and the 97 knuckle are close. Like Pluto and the Sun are close.

The knuckles from a 28 will not fit a 35, and the 95-97 knuckles are setup for the bolt-on calipers, but the 94 and earlier all used slide pins.

The fact that your axle falls in that short year range is why you are having so much trouble finding a knuckle.

I have to question if you actually need a knuckle though. You said you have a crack in the lug hole. Well the studs for the lug nuts aren't attached to the knuckle, they come with the rotor. Got any pics of the problem?

Well, I went and looked at them. I believe they would not mount up, and they are definitely different. No where near as beefy as the 35s.

I guess I should have specified. Not the lug hole, but the lug style bolts that mount the spindle to the knuckle. Sorry for the confusion.

The knuckles are cast iron.

if i remember right cast iron can't be welded. but i am by no means a expert on welding

In day of old you could not get a good weld on iron. Today, you can get just about any metal that doesn't burn with heat welded.

Cast iron can be TIG welded with nickel-99 filler, and I think EverDur (silicon bronze) will work as well.

Does anybody know how many different 4x4 knuckles there for 97? 4.0 with 5 speed manual if that matters. Sorry to keep posting here in the urgent section. My trucks on stands in my neighbors side of the carport.
