Check the light Green/Red wire on the Voltage regulator that is the Battery Light wire, it should have 12volts when key is on
This turns on the alternator

When you turn on the key the battery light gets 12volts from ignition switch, the LtGreen/Red wire on the voltage regulator is its ground at this time, so light bulb lights up.
When you start the engine the alternator should produce 13volts and the LtGreen/red wire is now 13v and so is the ignition wire, so battery light now has 13volts at each connection, so it is off.

Here is a wiring diagram with the other hook ups: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/EDiagrams/files/diagram_charging_1983to1985_1.JPG

There are only two wires necessary the large black/orange wire to the alternator should be full time hot from the battery and the field wire from the regulator to the alternator. I believe the field wire goes through the grey 8 wire connector by the ignition coil. The tech library has a troubleshooting guide but my guess it is at the grey 8 wire connector. Some guys go crazy cuttin out the old computer harness you can just splice the wire in to the regulator direct from the alternator. Are you getting battery voltage at the large connector on the alternator?

The S or stator wire on the alternator should read about 8 volts when the engine is running and is not used on your engine. The white/black wire terminates at the 8 wire connector on my 83 ranger. You can use it to power up a choke thermostat so it only has power when the engine is running. (old school)

Finally fixed it believe it or not had stator and field wired switch at alternator. Now I'm going to build custom upper intake to fit a 32/30 Weber carb I was originally going to put on an iron duke.

Easy enough to get them backwards. Just a word of caution the 2.8 really dont have the displacement to process fuel in a larger carb. Much over 250 cfm carb and the fuel will just drip into the manifold and puddle and create performance issues. Just put a motorcraft/autolite 2150 with a 1.08 venturi and #42 jets anything larger and you will lose the upper end performance. If you want power do the 5.0 conversion you aint gonna get it with the 2.8.
