Hello all,

First off I am new to the forum but have always been a ford girl inside (even though Ive owned jeeps primarily). I had a 89 bronco 2 but had to get rid of her but since then Ive been looking for another ford to take her place.

Now onto my question,

I have found a 88 ranger xlt 4x4 that I am interested in possibly buying but theres one snag...it doesn't run, for long. When inquiring about it he said that it is still getting spark, he replaced the fuel pump, regulator and filter as well as the lines but that's it. The guy believes that it might be the map sensor or the TPS but isn't sure so I thought I would ask the helpful people on ranger forum. He also said that it does start and runs but it will "turn off" after a few feet of driving.

Even though I am a girl I do know my way around an engine somewhat, so don't get mad if I ask seemingly stupid questions lol

Soo...any idea what it could be and if it is an easy fix?! He is asking $1200 but I don't want to get into something too deep (I have plenty of major projects around here)....so any help is greatly appreciated.

The 88 Ranger will have 2 fuel pumps. A low pressure pump in the tank and high pressure pump on the frame rail. If it is a low fuel pressure problem, it could also be a bad fuel pump relay or corroded inertia switch or wiring.

There are no stupid questions only stupid answers :)

And here is one, lol.

It doesn't read like an expensive fix.
Probably not MAP or TPS sensor, neither would cause engine to suddenly stop running.

Yes, there are two fuel pumps the low pressure pump in the tank also has a screen on it(the sock), and over the years it can get clogged up so flow is limited, idle is fine but when fuel demand goes up there is not enough fuel getting to the injectors.

Also clogged exhaust system can cause pressure to build up so RPMs are limited, but usually no stalling.

TFI ignition system has 100% failure rate at it's current age, but usually it will cause a stall after it gets warm/hot
