I am in the middle of changing the valve stem seals on my 85 ranger 2.8 and I got to thinking. This truck is really old how can I check the valve guides too? So does anyone know how I can check my valve guides without pulling the heads?? Any help is greatly appreciated

No, there is no way without removing the valve, and the other side of that is what would you do if one did test bad :)

Valve guides rarely wear out, the seals do.
Just replaces the seals and oil burning will stop

I don't see how you can.
The clearances are so small that you can't measure them without taking the head apart. Just replace the seals, if the guides/valve stems are too worn, you will wear out the new seals in pretty short order. And you will be back to where you were before you replaced them.

It could be months, it could be years!!

I got half of them done without much trouble. The old seals were shot. Dried up brittle and shrunk.
