Fuel issues

I recently obtained a 1988 ranger 2.9L 4x4 from a family member who was fed up with it. I'm stuck on it as well, I had no fuel pressure so I tested the pumps and found that they were bad so I replaced them. After replacing them I still had no pressure, so I replaced the relay and then bypassed the inertia switch. And still no power to the pumps, or the inertia switch. At the relay I have 12volts from the battery, but nothing elsewhere. Any suggestions would be appreciated

There is also maybe a Fuel reservoir(canister filter) in the frame rail.

So you can not hear the pumps come on for 2 seconds when the key it turn to ON, they only come on briefly, that is normal.

The power for the fuel pump does pass thru the Fuel Pump Relay, this power comes from a 30amp fuse or fusible link, and will always have power key on or key off.

One of the other slots in that relay connection should have 12v only when key is on, that is the Relay power, not Fuel Pump power.
This 12v comes from the EEC relay located next to the fuel pump relay.
When key is turned ON EEC relay should click then Fuel Pump relay should click, then click again when it shuts off.

The EEC relay powers the computer(EEC), fuel injectors and ignition.
The wires can get corroded, so Fuel Pump relay might only be getting 5v, not enough to close it.

So test for 12v in TWO slots in that relay connector.

Then check the EEC relay right next to the Fuel Pump Relay, there are 3 relays in a row, from memory Green is Fuel, Brown is EEC, the 3rd relay turns off A/C when throttle is wide open, is is call the WOT(wide open throttle) cutout relay.

The EEC relay should have one 12v slot with key on or off, this is from a 30amp fuse, or fusible link(this 12v powers the fuel pump relay and other devices), a second slot should have 12v when key is on, this relay also needs to be grounded, the fuel pump relay is not grounded.

Upper left is where the wiring for the EEC relay and Fuel pump relay are seen.
Wire colors are usually the same but don't count on it :)

So the 12v power from the EEC relay is not getting to the Fuel pump relay, either the EEC relay has no 12v power to pass(blown fuse) or the EEC relay is not closing(bad relay or power). or the wire from EEC relay to Fuel Pump relay is bad.

Thanks man, its the fuseable link going to the ecu relay. I was thinking about using a regular fuse, what amperage should I use?

2.9l 1 of 3, shows EEC power passing fuse as 30amps

While it might have failed from age the fusible link may have separated(blew) for a reason, there could be a short somewhere in the EEC 12v system.
I would check the EEC relay socket with an OHM meter to Ground, to see if there is 0 OHMs(a short) or low OHMs.
There should be one ground in that socket that is used to close the relay, but only 1 ground if another socket tests as a ground then you will have to find the short.
