2.3 oil pump pickup tube gasket

I'm currently doing an oil pan gasket and rear main seal on my 96 Ranger which requires removal of the oil pickup tube to get the pan out of the truck.

The pickup tube has a very thin paper gasket which I naturally want to replace. Problem is Ford has discontinued it, and none of the parts stores can get anything unless I get the lower engine complete gasket set (which is special order.)

I need the truck back on the road ASAP, can I just cut my own gasket for the pickup tube? Normally I'd just do it but I don't want to pull the transmission again for a 3 cent seal.

Just make a gasket out of suitable material...or cork lol

I guess I should have asked, is there any specific gasket material that would be more appropriate for this particular seal? I'm not using cork. It's just a very thin seal and the material I have is much thicker.

I plan on making my own, now that I have called every parts store in town and was told that the only way to get it is either buy the complete kit and wait a week, or suck it up and make one.

I would just us the black gasket material you can get in sheets at auto parts stores, the thickness won't be a problem.

With the trans and flywheel removed did you have enough room to get the oil pan out the back without unbolting the engine ? I want to check my oil pickup screen. I think my Ranger still has the factory clutch so I think it would be a good time to replace my clutch. I just had the same problem you did trying to find a new pickup screen gasket. It looks like I will have to make one too.
