This little project is mostly in the planning stage right now but I would like to get some feedback about things I might be missing.

I have an '86 F150 with a EFI 5.0 and 4 speed manual.

I'm buying a 5.8 from a '96 F150. The truck it is in belongs to my buddy who is parting it out. The engine has very low compression on several cylinders and has 260k on it and needs to be rebuilt but does run. I can have everything I need off the truck, including the wiring harness (MAF,) ECM, accessories, and anything else. The truck has an auto transmission.

My questions:

- Since I am rebuilding the engine anyway. What are my best options for making more power as far as heads, cam, etc. I am open to using aftermarket heads if they are reliable. I would like to make somewhere in the 300-350hp range and definitely want to run pump gas. I realize building engines is expensive but I would like to stay around the $3-4000 range or less if possible.

- Fuel pump/lines/fuel rail: I assume that I can use my factory 2 pump setup with the 96's EFI? I am aware that the hose connectors are different - if I found a fuel rail from an earlier EFI 5.8 that would match the ones I have now, will the older fuel rail work with the '96 engine? That would GREATLY simplify things as I would not have to swap fuel lines and sending units into my truck.

- Wiring harness: The donor truck has all power options, my truck has none, and the only thing I need to keep is the AC stuff. Is the '96 wiring harness similar to the '86 in that the engine harness is mostly isolated from the cab harness, as is the case in the older vehicles, or do I need to plan on pulling the entire wiring harness from the '96, including what's in the cab?

- ECM: Will an ECM from an OBD-2 automatic work with a manual transmission or do I need a manual trans computer?
