You will need an entire new system including new housings. HID lights have to be in projector housings. If you see someone selling an HID kit with bulbs only, they are not true HID light. They will come with the lights themselves and ballasts for them.

HID's may look cool, but because of the blue bulbs HID's ARE DANGEROUS
I believe they are also ILLEGAL

The beam in a typical halogen bulb heat evenly
and the hid lights scatter making it very chopy when passing someone.

HID lights are legal as long as you have them in projector housings. If you dont then you get the scattering that will blind anyone around you.

You can get away with HID's in a non projector housing just aim your headlights a little lower. I know it's not the "right" way but I have seen HID's in a non projector housing in a 01+ Ranger housing and the glare is not bad.

re aiming the headlights lower would be good to keep the beams low but I would think that it would still be very wide

no, you will need headlights that are for 01 and up. those look similar but they will not fit.
