ive got an automatic 3.0 4x4 ranger. I wanna put a 5 speed in there. Will the 5 speed from a 2.3 2wd work? What housing do I need for the transfer case

No. The 5-speeds after 1990 had a 1-peice case with integral bell housing, and the 3.0 is the odd-ball among Ranger engines for bell pattern.

Also, you can't just slap a transfer case on the back of a 2wd trans and make is a 4x4. The output shaft length is different.
