Welcome to TRS :)

2000 Ranger could have "Live Axle" always locked, up front, or PVH automatic hubs, or Manual hubs(added on)

Which do you have?

Good upgrade :)

So leave the hubs Unlocked and shift into 4high to see if whine is still there, if so then noise is from transfer case or front drive shaft/axles

Then put in 2WD and Lock the front hubs and see if whine is there, if so then not transfer case so you are down to front drive shaft/axles or...........new hubs, when Locked

could it have anything to do with the driveshaft or electric shift motor.

No, drive shafts problems are usually described as clicking, not whining, noise

Electric shift motor is only used when shifting between 2wd, 4wd, 4low, otherwise it is OFF, so can't make any noise

Whining or hummmm, is usually a bearing of some kind

Since the wheel bearings are used all the time, being in 2wd or 4wd wouldn't matter, noise would be there all the time.

You do have CV joints on the front axle so they could be the issue.

Maybe, if you lift up all 4 wheels :)

If possible lift front by aframes so wheels/axle are at normal height, not hanging down

Did you ever find out what it was? I just brought a ’92 Ranger home tonight. It too has a whine that I’ve never heard before and I suspect (for other reasons), that it may be stuck in 4 HI.
