I have a 1989 ranger with the 2.9L and was wondering why it has 2 fuel filters in it . It has the canister style like i was told it has, but approximately 16 inches in front of it is another one that is cylinder style for newer ones. can anyone tell me why they put 2 in and what the purpose is. My truck keeps dying alot and i'm not sure if it is a fuel filter or the cat is starting to plug up? Can anyone help my confused mind

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Are you sure you are seeing 2 filters and not one filter and one high pressure fuel pump? I would only expect one filter.

The canister was used as a reservoir during the switch over to fuel injection, it may or may not have a filter inside.

When there were 2 fuel pumps the low pressure pump in the tank supplied needed Volume of fuel but at low pressure, the high pressure pump was added in the frame rail when fuel injection was added, and it needed a reserve on startup in case pressure had been lost at the engine end of the fuel system.

If you have a 2 pump system then there will be canister/reservoir near the gas tank, then in line High Pressure Pump, THEN an inline fuel filter between high pressure pump and engine

Carburetors had the reservoir in the Float Bowl for startup

Are you sure this is an 89?

An 89 should have neither frame-mounted fuel pump nor canister.
