So I have a 1990 Ford Ranger with a 2.9l V6 and a FM132 transmission currently bolted to it. Truck is 2-wheel drive, but the tranny is shot. I have an M5OD-R1 from a 1991 3.0l Ranger and am curious if the swap is possible. The yoke on the old drive shaft shaft is slightly too small to fit the newer transmission, so would a yoke from a driveshaft off of a 3.0 motor match the U-joint? Also, would the starter from from the same 3.0 motor work on the existing flywheel from the 2.9l? Still haven't checked if the tranny will even bolt up, just looking to see what is possible wit what I have already.

No, the 2.9l and 3.0l bell housing bolt pattern won't match

M5OD-R1 bell housing doesn't come off.

2.9l and 4.0l used the same bolt pattern

Maybe you can find a trade for 4.0l 2WD for your 3.0l 2WD

Needs to be 1997 or older, so it will have speedometer cable hook up

You will still need different drive shaft

Would a 5-speed from a 2.8l Bronco match?

Awesome thanks for the help, I went to pick a part today and found a Bronco 2 with a 2.9l and 5 speed on it, but it is 4WD. Could I used the transmission without the transfer case for my 2WD with some modification to the rear of the tranny? Or is the output shaft too different?

Very different.

2WD Explorers seem to be all over the place (at least around my neck of the woods they are). Might be another option to look for.

Manuals in explorers are hard to come by, and would need to be '91-'97 4.0l M5OD-R1 to get the speedo hookup

FM132 was 2WD only

FM145 and 146 were the 4WD manuals used before the M5OD-R1, and they had no separate tail shaft to swap out to convert to 2WD
