just posting as a public service for everyone else. swapping from a non-tach cluster to a tach cluster from an explorer doesnt keep the check engine light unless you repin the cluster terminals. I didnt really want to get into it so I just bided my time and waited for a same year ranger (mine is a 96 with the two prong temp sensor...I needed a 96 ranger tach cluster or an early 95/96 explorer cluster that uses the same two prong temp sensor.

finally got a high optioned 96 ranger in the u-pull with the tach cluster. snagged it and tossed it in and now my check engine light works perfect as does the temperature gauge and everything else.

There was another member on here with a 1996 Ranger who went the same route and ran into this problem. He actually went through the process of repining it but I can't remember how that turned out.

If anyone wants to have a go at the swap look for posts in the 4 banger section under hazrail for the documentation. It was fairly recent so the post should only be a few levels deep.

Pretty sure he even titled a new thread something like "no tach to tach" or whatever. I would go looking for it but I'm just about to start another project...:)
