Explorers didn't go unibody until 2012 I believe, when ever the current generation started. As SVT said, 4406's are near bolt in, they're the case from 97-03 F-150's. Head over to the explorer forum, there are plenty of write ups there. I'll be watching this build, your ranger was pretty much exactly what I want mine to end up like, and I'm excited to see where this explorer goes.

Out of curiousity and because i know that 036speed can use a 1356 if he wants whats the gearing differences between the 4406 and the 1356

i have always liked the "serious explorations" forum, i own a 97 my self with the sohc and that thing was a tank!!! til the tranny blew up and having common timing chain problems... always heard the f150 t cases is a common swap in the v8s

My credo

Sweet build! Definitely sub'd. Followed the ranger build on here and FB, so I'll be sure to do the same with this one!

Well, Onebadex has a 05+ D60 he has been sitting on for a while. After doing some reading, going to try to get over there and snag it if the unit bearings look good.
Larger tubes. 35 spline outers. Larger knuckles. My Summit Racing clearance section 5.38s will work as well. Time will tell.

It kinda fits. Artec makes one but its for a JK swaps. So I am sure you can get just the truss with a phone call.

Yea looked on thier site and it says it fits all year ranges. Find it weird they say make sure you have a 60 not a dana 50.

Seeing as the housings were the same just the 50 has a smaller ring and pinion neck down axles and 30 spline stubs.

Edit: fwiw you can get unit bearings from currie or even trail gear i believe with 8x6.5 lug pattern or toyota

What would be cool is get 5x5.5 then you still can use a 9" rear

I have been reading a lot about these axles. At one point I read the 50 housing was narrower. Not sure how true that is. I also thought they were just different internals.

@$380 each for those UBs, I will just run a matching 8x170 Sterling. If I can find one....

You can also just redrill 8x6.5 in between the metric pattern or just get a newer rear. Be careful when looking at rear axles alone...the Vans kept the 8x6.5 pattern well into the 2000's
