Well I have decided to post up a build thread. Little background on the truck, I am the 7th owner of my ranger, the truck was most definitely a northern truck in the past and seems to have arrived in Texas just in time (good amount of surface rust but nothing substantial other than core support:annoyed:). With that said, the truck seems to have been well taken care of the majority of its life. It's got 232k miles on the original trans and engine as proof, although they show there age lol. I bought the truck June 6, 2013 and have enjoyed putting about 23k miles on her since then.

Bone Stock:

How it looks today:

My plan is to eventually have a trail-worthy rig while staying a reliable daily driver throughout the build. From my research on this forum, these are the specs I hope to end up with all said and done:

-open 8.8 explorer axle w/disk brakes & 3:73 gears
-lunchbox locker for rear
-diff cover for rear
-Chevy leaf springs (flex:D)
-4in stage 1 Skyjacker
-33s or 32s (depending on sag from 5.0)
-96-97 1/2 explorer 5.0
-4R70W trans
-bronco 1356 transfer
-Warn manual hubs
-retain air conditioning
-fleetside bed
-fender flares
-camper

Mods done:
Dana 35 swap
r134a conversion
06+ mirror swap
06+ seat swap
pioneer stereo & speakers
skyjacker leveling coils
15in pro comp 52 steel wheels
tons of maintenance

Update:

For the past month or so I've really been trying to make my Ranger more suitable for the deep muddy water I routinely put her through. As we speak I am trying to compile a list of ALL the modifications that should be done to a RBV when heavy mud terrain off-roading is in the picture. Please feel free to add input and advice! Now I know, I know, my 29" tires and enormous 1.5" lift is probably the main culprit when it comes to why my truck has issues, but my goal is to ride this setup as long as I can bear so I can work/spend money on other essential parts of the truck. So anyways here's the rough-draft of modifications needed for submerged truckin:

  • Front Differential Drain Plug (Dana28/35 Lacks a cover or plug for draining)
  • Front Diff Extended Breather Hose
  • Rear Diff Extended Breather Hose
  • Transfer Case Extended Breather Hose
  • Transmission Extended Breather Hose (Manual Only I believe)
  • Front Wheel Bearing Marine Grade Grease
  • Greasable Steering/Drive-shaft Components (Not sure on this one but it makes sense to me)
  • Snorkel or modified intake
  • Possibly a modified Distributor
  • Maybe: Grease Zerk hubs?? (Where grease is water cant be!)
  • Controversial: Poly Bushings>Rubber

Probably missed a bunch of stuff so feel free to add!

Update:

Some of the swap parts came in today! Yay!

Oil Pan stud kit:

Advance Adapters Oil Filter Relocation Kit:

Dual sump oil pan pickup tube:

I also picked up this np205 off of craigslist, its seen better days and will need new yokes on both ends (they're cracked...), a new gasket/seal kit at least, paint, and a dual stick setup. Anyone got any advice on some dual sticks? I've seen some cable driven units and that seems like it'll probably be the best bet since this is totally custom. A foxbody dual sump oil pan is on the way and I'm planning on going with a 2 core fully aluminum "racing" radiator off ebay with a electric fan like this one:http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-ROW-ALUMINUM-RACING-RADIATOR-14-BLUE-FAN-91-94-EXPLORER-RANGER-3-0L-4-0L-V6-AT-/400526367296?fits=Model:Ranger&hash=item5d413b5a40&vxp=mtr

Any objections lol? I'm planning on buying the radiator and T-case parts on the 10th so I still have time to make a decision on this one.

NP205:

Any input or advice is greatly appreciated! Getting some graduation money so I hope to buy an explorer donor with that!

Just bought some 1" pucks from performance accessories. I figured the clearance will help big time, and I'm not a big fan of the gap associated with a 3" body lift so this works for me. Gonna paint the frame, replace my rusted core support, and replace the fuel filler neck in the meantime.

Parts that have come in recently:

Foxbody oil pan:

1" body lift pucks:

New fuel filler neck that I bought that's for a fleetside (about 1/4 the cost of flareside) but will be cut to fit:

The plan right now is to do the 8.8 swap and all that entails in the next few weeks on a "weekend" (my weekends are monday afternoons and tuesdays..) Any tips on that would be appreciated.

Are you going to keep the return-style fuel lines from the 96 parts truck or converting to the later return-less? Do you have the P/N for the the 1" body pucks? I've been considering a small body lift and like you don't like the gaps the 3" BL leaves.

I'm keeping the return style, I'll put the link up of where I got the pucks when I get home. There's also a thread on the the ranger forum about it that I'll give ya.

Got the donor mountaineer today! Got it for $750, turns out it has a tad bit less than 100k miles. Runs very strong but previous owner mis-matched 215/75 r15 and 225 75 r15... this caused the front diff to blow and I'm worried about the rear end (it had mis-matched tires as well...anyways heres some pics!

Hauled it home:

Sitting in the back field:

ahh yeah....:

Annnd there's the prize!:

How's the progress coming? I'm interested in putting a 302 in my ranger as well.
