1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 OHV, Auto, 4x4

Just bought on February 23, 2012. It was stuck in 4-low, so we swapped and installed a manual transfer case. It was starting and ran in first gear, but we reused original hardware on the filter by accident. So we dropped the transmission pan again (hoping the only issues was air). Now it doesn't want to shift at all. It starts fine but struggles to drive and gets up to 3000-4000 RPM, then I have to let off the gas for it to wined down.

Second day of having it home and in total we changed- air filter, transfer case, transmission fluid & filter, wiper blades, spark plugs, oil change & filter.

Here's a look under my hood.

Right now I just want to get it running! I'm just learning how to do more than filters, checking the oil, and filling tires. My boyfriend (disciplerocks) is use to working on manuals, so automatics is a lil' different for him. My speedometer and odometer don't work either. It is computerized, D (boyfriend- disciplerocks) thought the '96 models weren't, so it's not as easy as a fix as we had hoped. Once it gets running and the important things are working, my list is as follows: coolant, get it detailed, get steps added on, new steering wheel, change cassette player out with a CD player, see what's wrong with the AC, get a new antenna...I'm sure the list will continue, as does the list D's B2 and Focus

Here's a look on the inside, and you'll understand why I want it detailed.

The 15 inch tires are alright. The steering wheel needs replaced, I threw a steering wheel cover on it for now.

Here's a thread D put up, he explains what's going on with it a lil' better.

I'm ready to get dirty and get it running, so any suggestions will be welcomed. :icon_welder:

only thing I can think of is straighten out the cover on the wheel.....it's not lined up right:D:D

as for the tranny, did ya run the gear selector through all the gears before ya tried to move it....right after the fluid change???

I don't care about the wheel cover. LOL. I did a run through of the gears after the 2nd fluid change. I didn't quite hit each gear one by one...I tried. I went through it 2x's. I told D to fill it with gas and try to drive it again before messing with it again. He had to drain fluid after our 2nd time bc/ after driving it up the road and back the dip stick said it was too full...having trouble getting it just right.

Ok so I replaced the solenoid that threw the code and it still wouldn't shift. Next thing to check was the intermediate band. Tried the adjustment screw, and sure enough it went all the way in. Weird I didn't see anything in the pan.

Lol. I wonder how much of this build is going to be this. Hopefully you get it running soon.
I'm just messing with her. She was sitting next to me.

Picking up a 5r55e from a buddy from work. Was rebuilt recently, but he started having shifting issues and trouble getting it to downshift when coming to a stop. From the research I've done on this it sounds like a solenoid or the valve body gasket. I'm going to check the bands and swap all the electronics from Katie's tranny to the new one. Hope it works out.

On an up note, I did get the 2000 cd player working.
