ZF5-S42 Questions

I want to use the small block version of the ZF5 behind the 5.0 in my 4x4 Ranger, but I have some Q's about it. I think I already know the answers but want to make sure...

1. Does it use the same slave, clutch, and hydraulic setup as the F-150's M5R2? That's what I have in the Ranger now and it is destroyed...

2. Is a 3 inch body lift adequate to clear the transmission tunnel?

3. Will any ZF5 from a truck with the 4.9 or 5.8 work? I'd rather have the close ratio version since it is closer to the M5R2's ratios, but I believe that is only available with the diesels... I can live with the granny gear.

4. Also, I assume it has the same generic 6 bolt pattern to mate up to a BW4406 transfer case?

if it is from behind a 5.8 it will work, I don't think they used it on a 4.9. I believe they used the same master/slave cyl as the M50D. Although, you may need to modify the firewall. look at the bellhousing slopes in between the m5od and the ZF

Same 6 bolt pattern. I think the shifter sits a lot further back on an m5od. My zf5 shifter comes out under the dash

I believe I've heard it's possible with a 3 inch body lift. That gets rid of the effect of the difference in the slope of the bell housing I think. As far as the shifter location goes how much farther back is it than the R2? Shift linkage can always be modified...but if I can use the shifter I have now that would be nice.

Here's where mine sets in my 1st gen. They did come behind a 4.9, I pulled one from a truck in pick n pull a month ago that was mated to a 4.9.

1. Yes it uses the same slave setup, factoy ranger line will hook to it.
2. You will need a body lift unless you want to cut and beat the firewall and floor. 3in is good
3. You can find the ZF behind a straight 6, 302 or 351.
4. Yes it uses the same spline and bolt circle as a typical fullsize. Just a heads up you will have to grind a notch for the shift rail if you want to use a NP205.

And yes the shifter will be under the dash a bit. Get the shifter with it, cut the bottom and reweld it so it works.

Thanks for the info. It seems I knew everything except for the shifter placement. It will be mated to a BW4406, not an np205. It's an electric shift t-case that I currently have working with my trashed m5r2.
