I wasn't sure if this was the correct section or not- but it is a v8 conversion. My 83 ranger's charging was getting pretty sporadic so I just put a new alt on- and now it's not even charging. I put the new plug on and everything...no go. Thoughts? Is there a fuse somewhere or possibly a fusible link somewhere? It's dark now, so that is why I'm asking the questions.....

There's a voltage reg on the alt itself. Where the plug with 3 wires-joins down to one wire, does that line have a fusible link inline somewhere? I'm thinking I have to start tracing wires...urrgghhh

Depending on the alternator, there are probably either 2 or 4 smaller wires on it.

On the 4 wire alts, the white/black is simply a loop between two terminals on the alternator.

On all, the Yellow/White wire should be hot at the alternator at all times and the Green/Red wire is hot with the ignition on.

If both of those two wires have battery voltage with the ignition on, you've probably got a duff alternator.

If not, then I'd check the fuse for the green/red, the fusible link for the yellow/white or for corrosion/loose connections at the battery or engine bay fuse/relay box.

That's awesome, thanks! In the big plug there are 3 wires. 2 are black with an orange stripe, and a white with black stripe. then there are, I can't remember how many plug into the black box on the alt. that's what I thought was the voltage reg........

On the yellow wire I have batt voltage. But the green with red stripe I only have 11.6v. Right to the firewall.....

Probably about right. There's a resistor and light bulb in that same green/red wire so it's starting to look like you have an alternator or primary power cable problem.

hmmmm, how could i totally rule out the alt? the main power cable as in the 2 larger wires that plug into the alt?
