Hi, my vehicle is 87 bronco ii, the engine's been swapped with a non-egr version. I'm not sure which year it is, but here are some pictures. The ID on the side of the intake is RF-E87E-9425-AA if that means anything interms of year.. I would wild guess I have an 88 engine but want to be sure because I'll be spending 120 to buy a new one on autozone.com unless any tipoff to where I can get it for cheaper. I do notice 88 and 89 computers are different autozone (why is that?). Thank you!

Also on a side note, I don't plan to do this but I'm curious are there any merits in retrofitting egr to my existing post-87 engine and keeping the 87 computer? Why was egr eliminated after 87? Thank you.

That's an 88 intake at least, late year at that. Since you have knocking issues and an 87 computer, I would suspect the lack of EGR to be a part of the problem.

Ford deleted the EGR because they found they were able to keep it's effects and ditch it's problems, and meet emissions standards by changing things in the software to control the timing and increasing the efficiency of the cats. If you look at the flanges an 87 cat won't bolt to an 88 y-pipe.

The computer part numbers are different because the software was revised each year, but any 2.9 computer 88 to 92 will work, those olde EEC-IV systems weren't nearly as picky as modern ones.

I wouldn't mess with adding EGR, I would get an 88+ computer and see what it does.

That reminds me, this is already a done deal but earlier without remembering I had a non-87 engine, I went and ordered an 87 cat and 87 y-pipe from rockauto and put them on. Is that ok attached to a maybe 88 engine?

So I can use and 89 computer even if the engine is 88? Saw one on ebay that's 89 for about 50, cheaper than autozone..

That will all mix and match. Your tailpipe emissions might be out of whack, so that's something to consider if you have to pass a sniffer test.

89 computer will be just fine. The only year to watch is 1990, because some had MAF and some didn't.

That would be a O2 sensor plug, Or at least that is what it looks like to me.
