R&R Distributor Cap ?

New to my 91 2.9 Ranger. Not new to Ford cars and trucks. My F150 died 2 years ago and was fortunate enough to find a decent 1991 Ranger 2.9 XLT.

I'm about a "5" when it comes to doing basic maintenance and R&R on most parts. Most important, I know what I don't know and am not afraid to ask for advice. So here I am.

I go to do some basic maintenance; plugs, ignition wires, cap & rotor, clean IAC and check other stuff like hoses etc.. I look for the distributor cap and find it's buried right next to the firewall. There doesn't seem to be enough room to remove it. There's stuff to the left, right, and above (upper intake) preventing removal.

I asked around and someone told me that the best way is to loosen transmission mount with jack under tranny and let motor down about an inch. That sounds a bit drastic.

Before I tackle the above, if I remove the ignition wires from the distributor can I remove the distributor cap with a little patience and a few coaxing mechanic words?

Any advice or directions would be greatly appreciated. I'm planning on taking pictures and posting here if this will help anybody.

Been alot of years since I did mine on now gone Ranger, but it does come out
remove the wires and then the hold downs for cap, (7mm hex I think)

Then wiggle it out and new one back in, you will need a new rotor, but I am sure you have that.

I don't remember doing the transmission mount thing, but you could, and you would want to raise the transmission, to raise the back of the engine, not lower it

That dis cap is not that hard to do. I take off half the wires, just pick a side of the engine and take off those 3 wires, undo the screws, and it will come out the other side. You can go in either direction, but sometimes going to the driver's side is easier with AC.
