Hey guys great forum. I have an 88 ranger set timing to 10 btc with spout connector out. It seems when I put the spout back in it automatically retards the timing to 5-10 after tdc. Had anyone had anything similar to this. Thanks guys

Does it advance the timing if you give it throttle?

It does appear to be advancing it. When driving it has a hesitation and kind of a surge and seems to have a loss of power. No codes running or koeo.

Check Throttle position sensor(TPS)
Should have 3 wires
Top wire will have 5volts, with key on engine off
Center wire will have .7-.9volts with throttle close, under 1 volt

As you slowly open the throttle the voltage on center wire should slowly increase, no jumping around or drops, when throttle is wide open you should see above 4.5volts.

Use a sewing pin/needle to pierce wires to check voltages.

TPS is like the accelerator pump on a carb, when you push down on the gas pedal the TPS gives the computer a "heads up" to add extra fuel for acceleration and to advance the spark.

Did you disconnect the battery after setting the timing so the computer is forced to relearn it's stuff?
