Hello,

I recently purchased a manual 1986 4x4 ranger 2.3
It starts up fine and idles well. The second i place the shifter over the gear its stalls. I dont even have to release the clutch it just imeaditaly dies. I can keep it alive by gassing A LOT, weird thing is that reverse wont cause it.

Any advice would help, ive searched all over for something like this but i cant find a thing.

I tested my fuses and the IAC seems to be responding to being unplugged.

Thanks

The only electrical connection on the manual trans is the Reverse lights.
can't see that causing a stalling issue even shorted.
But unplug it and see.

As you surmised there is no common explanation for this, never heard of it myself.

Obviously the truck is not moving forward when you try to put it into 1st gear or you would have mentioned that, so it isn't stalling from torque load.

So it will idle all day long in Neutral, but as soon as you push in the clutch and shift it into 1st engine starts to die, if you pull it back quickly does it come back to life?
If you push in clutch and leave it in neutral does it stay running.

And the Reverse thing, and staying running????

nothing comes to mind, and I mean nothing, I am intrigued

EDIT:
Maybe pilot bearing is seized to input shaft, so even with clutch pedal down the input shaft can't stop turning with flywheel and you are loading down the engine enough to stall, grasping at straws, lol

The truck runs great in Neutral, and I can move the truck by giving it a lot of gas.

Yes, it stays alive if i bring the stick back quick. The clutch isnt affecting it only when I enter the selector into one of the gears.

Sorry! Forgot to mention that the clutch sounds like it needs to be changed (slapping sound when pedal is released).

It has let me go into gear a couple times without any problems before but only for a little. Kind of like its fixed but just comes back.

Thanks Everyone

When was the timing belt last changed?

I would do a compression test, 2.3l should be 155+ psi in each cylinder.

If timing belt has slipped and compression is under 120psi then virtually no torque at all, engine would stall easily.

And I think you have a clutch issue, with clutch pedal in, when you shift into first the input shaft has to go to 0 RPMs to match Output shaft(rear wheels).
If it can't it will drag the engine RPMs down, causing it to stall, if engine torque is low.

Ill run a compreasion check and report back, also ill see about the timing.

If the clutch is the issue, would what you said happen with the clutch still pressed in?

Because thats what im finding weird is that it happens with or without the clutch being pressed in.
