seized spring bolt

im redoing my rear suspension and got a set of exploder leafs but one of the bolts is seized to the sleeve in the bushing. i got it to come out a little bit but now it wont come out any further due to the rubber absorbing the shock from my hammer. had this happen once with a shock bushing but i forgot how i got it out. thanks in advance. :icon_thumby:

Soak it with penetrating lube and use a punch and a hammer. If all else fails use a torch and melt the bushing and beat it out.

its been soaking for a while, and ive tried the punch but like i said the rubber is absorbing all of it. as far as the torch i need the rubber because this is on the spring going in.

could you maybe use a pitman or gear puller in reverse, to push it through from the other side?

If you have an air hammer with a compressor that can provide the amount of air needed to power it that might work better than a hammer and punch. Or it may not. Just a thought. Maybe a slide hammer but that would take some rigging to make work.

see that slit in the sleeve?
get a sacrificial screwdriver about 1/8" wide and pound it into that slit from the other end. that will open the sleeve and release "some" of the tension on the bolt.

not fun, requires lots of sweat.

another option, get 2 open end wrenches that fit the bolt shaft, put on the exposed part of the shaft and pry the sleeve off.
start with just 1 and work it back 'n forth to widen the gap.

I did mine while still on the truck, I took a come along and hooked to the bolt then to the opposite frame rail, came right out, and then pushed the rubber out and took a sawsall and cut the putter steel housing in 2 and air hammered them out, $20 is worth it for the poly bushing

You could try a ball joint press.

get a replacement bushing off RockAuto for like $5+shipping, then torch the old bushing out. that is basically your only option. just did that on my ranger.

I know you previously stated that the bushing is absorbing the hammer blows but have you tried immobilizing the spring in a bench vise of some sort and going at it with a sturdy punch and a BFH (Big F***ing Hammer)?

torched the rubber out, used my air hammer with cutting bit the cut and chisel out the sleeve replaced with new one. thanks for all the help!
