are there any requirements for getting rid of air bags when a car is scrapped?

or should I just wire it up, stand back and apply power? :yahoo: 12volts I presume.

this particular unit is from the passenger side of a 95 Taurus.

Ive never had a scrap yard care if I left airbags in a car when I dropped it off. If it's already out, there are a few places that buy them. They don't offer much though so not really worth the hassle. Id just find something entertaining to do with it and blow it up.

The only requirement I am aware of for disposal in the method you suggest is "take video and post it up".

I saw one several years ago out of a Crown Vic go off inside of a refrigerator. it was in the top freezer portion, and it blew out the bottom into the refrigerator part and blew the doors off. quite entertaining.

What about replacing airbags. After a fender bender my driver airbag exploded. I disconnected the fuse for the horn. and replaced the bag with one from a JY. It's not wired up just bolted in. But I'm curious as to what would happen if I did connect it. Would it explode immediately? Is there an airbag sensor that needs replaced somewhere near the front bumper. Busted grill and bent bumper and front cross member (EDGE) were the only other damaged areas.

If the airbag deployed usually the front crash sensor and the module have to be replaced, along with any pyrotechnic devices that activated, air bags, or seatbelt pre-tesioners.

Just hooking up a new airbag with a system that has been deployed will not set it off. The module will (should) have a code for crash data full which will keep the system disabled. Crash data is used to forensics so it can't be cleared, and the module only has enough memory to store one event, so they can't be confused. That's why the module has to be replaced after each event.

Where on the truck is this module? and can I do it, or is it something a body shop or dealer has to do. AND how do I reset the "crash data full" code

In the cab or under the cab by the firewall?
