So I'm in the process of finishing up installing a 2 inch body lift on my 88. Was attaching the steering shaft extension and was having some difficulty fitting it over the shaft so gave it a few taps with a mallet to help slide the extension all the way up and onto the shaft. Anyways, after a few taps the shaft shot up several inches into the firewall. I managed to pull it back out (somewhat) but it is still pushed back more than it was before the whacking began. Should I be worried about this? I'm not sure if the shaft is designed to telescope like that or if I knocked something out of place. Any tips on getting the shaft to pull back out the way it was?
thanks in advance.

clamp some vice=grip pliers onto the end of the shaft and hit on the pliers in the direction that will cause the shaft to slide out of the firewall to it's original length........
