I have an 88 Ranger pick up 2.9, auto transmission. I suspect the neutral safety switch is preventing it from starting. Does power run from the NSS to the relay? If so should it be 12 volts? Or does the power run from the relay to the NSS? I have a Hayes manual but the wiring diagram is too generic. Can anyone tell me the path the power takes once the ignition switch is turned to start?

Thanks for the assistance!!

Yes, don't rely on those diagrams for anything wiring.

From the ignition switch, out the cab, to the NSS as red/light blue, after the NSS it is white/pink (you could temporarily bypass to verify if the NSS is the issue at the trans plug). The white/pink goes back into the main harness and splices back into the red/light blue wire, which runs to the starter solenoid and the TFI module.

Thanks for the response! Can you tell me how to verify the problem is the NSS? Do you know what the voltage of the red/light blue wire at the starter solenoid?

Thanks again!

It's positive 12 volts. You can temporarily by pass, pull the plug from the side of the trans, and short circuit the red/light blue to the white/pink wire with a short section of wire, and see if it turns over now. Or apply 12 volts to the white/pink. You can test at the red/light blue for voltage at the plug to verify signal from the ignition switch.

Thanks again! If the red/light blue wire is supposed to be 12 volt at the starter solenoid couldn't I run a jumper wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the stud where the red/light blue wire attaches to the solenoid to test it?
