GEM is Generic Electronic Module. It's supposed to be behind the center of the instrument panel.

A logic module that controls all kinds of things in the truck....almost everything short of engine management. A good idea to reduce wiring in the truck slightly....but from what I've read, the modules are in fact generic and get programmed to the individual vehicle, so first you pay for a replacement unit, then you pay a dealership to programm the new one.
