Hello all,
I have a 99' Scab 4x4 4.0 5r55e got it used couple months ago. I can't locate ABS fuse to pull and check systm, no owners manual and fuses under hood along in cab are not listed on covers. Anyone help tell me what one? Thanks all for the great help from this forum, I have fixed several things on this truck just by reading other common issuse.

Thanks

location #14

It is in the fuse panel on the side of the dash on the drivers side... I just took mine out... but I'm not sure without the manual you will know which on #14 is???

Mine was also the #14 fuse in the fuse box. There is another in the power box under the hood ( theres really two ) but you shouldn't need to go there. I found this out with an ABS problem I posted earlier. But if you pull the fuse, ABS will not work. It will be standard power brakes. And your'e speedo will more than likely not work. And the ABS lite on the dash will be lit. Oh yea, Cool Dog!

Thanks guys,
I found the fuse, it was numbered so I am lucky that way. I will pull and test drive to see if problem is still there.
The problem is when I brake, most of the time the pedal goes to the floor with some flutter/vibration in pedal, I am able to still stop, also the steering wheel turns left at the same time. I am hoping ABS sensor like the other posts.

What ya think of that ?

If it goes away after pulling the fuse, most likely a sensor. Check out my last post on the ABS Sensor forum.

You should make all of the mechanical checks first, before messing with the ABS as many ABS complaints turn out to be the ABS system working like crazy to compensate for a foundation brake problem.

Check:
fluid level and condition
pad thickness and rotor condition
front wheel bearings for play
rear brakes for adjustment
ball joints for looseness
tire pressure and tread wear

All of that takes about twenty minutes.

^^^^^ yep.

I'd inspect the front pads and rotors right away.

I did a brake job ~ a month ago, similar symptoms (ABS judder & pull).

Found one rotor all eaten up with chunks missing. Pad was down to metal. It pulled, but ABS wouldn't let it lock up.

I went for a 100 mikle ride today and not once did it happen. I do have to say it is with the ABS system then.

I have checked iver these items
fluid level and condition Checked and topped off
pad thickness and rotor condition Check and inspected
front wheel bearings for play No extra play
rear brakes for adjustment Have not done
ball joints for looseness Replace left upp arm and left lower joint
tire pressure and tread wear New tires and a Alignment

All of that takes about twenty minute. Agree does not take long.

Should I now check over the front abs sensors, being it pulles left when it happens, should I check one side over the other first? Can I just remove and clean them or do I have to install new ones or replace front wheel hub ass ?

First, pull and clean the front sensors and spray down the tone rings with parts wash. That's the cheapest. Failing that, if the problem persists and you have no ABS light, you probably need the expensive piece--solenoid/motor module whatsidoodle thingy. It's either that or your ABS controller went apeshit. The only way to narrow it down further than that is to take it into a shop with the right test equipment.

When you say "no extra play" in the front wheel bearings, do you mean no play at all, or only slight play? You want no play at all.

When you topped off the fluid, was the old fluid clean? If it appeared dirty, before you replace the expensive piece, bleed your entire brake system until you get clean fluid. It probably won't salvage the module, but it's worth a try. Those modules can fail due to contaminants getting stuck in the valves.

FWIW, when you replace your brake pads, open the bleed screws before depressing the pistons so you don't blow crap backwards through the system. That's the most common way to wipe out hydraulic brake system components.

Your'e all right. Check everything. I replaced calipers, rotors, and had the system power bleed( replaced the fluid ) no luck. Needed it any way, but didn't fix it. If you can get those sensors out, clean them. I can't get mine out. So I have to change the hubs, I guess. They need it to, maybe. It would seem to me if it was a controller, the lite should be on. Oh Yea.. And never push the pistons back without opening the bleeder. Huge mistake by most.

I decide to pull left front sensor off first to inspect because that is the way the steering wheel turns when I brake. All the parts came off real nice, better then I thought. But when I got to the sensor I removed the allen bolt and cleaned around sensor so nothing could fall in.
Now when I removed the sensor, I did break the tube off that went in hub, yes I was able to get tube out also.

But my real question is, there was grease on the tip of sensor and also looking in hub at ring I see grease across most teeth on ring, not a lot but some. Is this right? Should it be dry as a bone in there?
The reason I ask is because I could replace sensor now and be done or if grease should not be there then I know to replace hub assembly.

thanks all......

I did call Advance Auto and got a part # abs 311 is only $ 89.98 to do job first. While I am going to wait couple days to get part in. I have started cleaning the left front knuckle parts, lubeing them. The only thing I found that maybe hurting the brakes was the 1 slider pin was frozen, looks to be the lower bolt. I heated up and got it free, sanded slide pins with new lube.
So with that said, I feel good that the hub is still good, NO free play in bearing, it feels tight. Looking in hole for sensor I see the back side of a bearing with white grease. I can assume it (the grease) should be in there cause the bearings.

When the sensor comes in, I will istall and repet on right side, minus breaking the sensor I hope. haha

Any input is good so please advise if I am done or doing something wrong
Thanks

Replaced left front abs

Got part and installed left front abs sensor. Then replaced parts and wheel. Test drove and still same problem. Well I guess I must look at the right front abs sensor. I hope I dont break this one.

Let me know exactly what fixes your problem because I'm having the same exact problem an its pissing me off and driving me insane, I pulled the fuse until I can figure it out but that was two weeks ago, when my abs light is on my brakes work perfectly but when the light goes off all hell breaks loose and my brakes do the same thing yours are doing

Well,
took the time to look into the right front ABS sensor, just like the left side. I broke it getting it out again. I do not think it is possible to get it out with out breaking cause the rust that builds up in the hole just over the o-ring.
So with that said, I reinstalled and ordered new part.

will post after part comes in, couple dyas they say..
