I have a 86 4x4 v-6 that I am looking to converting to diesel, I would really like to put a 4bt cummins but I may be able to make a good deal on a ranger factory turbo diesel. My question is will my v-6 automatic transmission bolt up to the factory diesel? What will I have to do as for as wiring and vacuum? I can handle making either engine fit and run, but it is the transmission operation I am concerned with and I definately want to stay with the automatic. How bad of performance compared to the stock 2.9 v6 should I expect from the factory diesel with an automatic?

Don't believe they offered the diesel with an auto (and jesus christ that would be slow), and no your transmission won't bolt to it, the diesels used their own tranny.

A ford factory diesel? Like the Euro diesel?? the 3.0?

In 83-84 the ranger was available with a 59 HP 2.2L N/A perkins diesel. In 85-87 the ranger was available with a ~87 HP 2.3L Turbo mitsubishi diesel.

Ah ha! see you dident say perkins.... and the mitsu ughh..

no matter what route you go, you wont be reusing your current transmission.

if your hell-bent on an auto, id go with a 4BT and whatever (i believe its a chevy) transmission usually backs it in the cube vans.

i heard of a company out there making adapter bellhousings and or plates for 4bt swaps, if i find it ill send ya the link..
