dose anyone have more info on this truck... so far as i know, it was 85 to 87, and it was a piece of crap... can anyone give me any info, pics, specs, anything would be helpful...

link the engine was weak, and they are pretty hard to come by. also the parts are extremely hard to find if you need to repair anything major. it can get costly. i prefer this option though link

I've never seen one, but I have the 87 Ranger/BII factory Ford manual and there is a ton of specs on the diesel.

My Grandpa had an 83 diesel Ranger. bought it brand new. He lives in Northern Wisconsin so rust basically killed it. He had almost 200k on it, started right up first time even on the colder winter days. He used it as a farm truck and also took it to California several times. The thing about finding parts is very true. right before he sold it, the gas tank was rusted out and he was having a devil of a time finding a tank for it. I think he sold it for about 350 bucks a few years ago, and it had a bad gas tank, bad brakes and a few other mechanical issues due to wear and rust.

for the engine, I believe they also put this engine in the escort in those years too.
As for being underpowered, I have driven it and I did not think it was any worse than the gas 4banger Ranger. He used his to tow a trailer occasionally as well. No problems. Granted you are not going to be outrunning very many cars, but it has enough get up and go to do most of your driving around town.

edit: the engine was made by Mazda I think

The engine was made by Mitsubishi, it is too bad they didn't make more of the things, I wouldn't mind having one.

I thought the mazda engine was the NA engine and the Mitsu was the turbo engine? My dads friend had a 87 turbo diesel ranger, great little truck, 32 mpg!

There was one on campus here last year all the time, not sure if he's still up here or not. J-rod13 and Todd know who the guy, I can't remember who had it though. It was a neat little truck, sounded weird as hell when he started it.

And it was in surprisingly good condition.

thanx for all your input... is it worth lifting one ya think?? i dunno... i suppose id hafta find one first anyways...

There was a user on here that had a lifted factory 4x4 one, he really liked it. Keep in mind they either had 60hp or 86hp, huge tires may not be a great idea.

The problem is getting parts and most of the ones that showed up on eBay the last few years had a million miles on them, meaning that they're going to be due for stuff. The tranny is diesel-specific and practically non-existent.

i bought one of the 83's new. They had a 2.2 l engine made by Mazda, reputed to be a Perkins design. Put out rip-roaring 59 horsepower. You had to be a fan, but I loved mine. Performance about like old VW beetle. I loved mine. Kinda noisy and slow but very solid. Wish i'd kept it.

In 85 they went to a turbo engine by Mitsubishi. I never drove one of those.

The 83 engine is built like a locomotive. I saw one cutaway next to the turbo engine, i'll take the earlier one any day.

Just found another 83, bought it. Love it. Adjusted valves today. Starts a bit slow - hope a starter overhaul fixes that.

From old research I did:

The Power Ram 50 diesel option was also a turbo 2.3 Mitsubishi. Maybe for parts?

Not for parts:

The Escort diesel was a 2.0 Mazda.

The LUV had a diesel option I think. Not sure but I'm guessing Isuzu power.

The Jeep Cherokee had a 2.1 Renault diesel available 85-87.
