maybe a few of you guys may have heard this lurking other forums but after google searching, i'm 95% positive that this is true. forgive me if this post looks repetitive, i'm kinda copy pasting this on other forums to let people know. I have been searching long and hard looking for a cheap optima since the battery in my sport was tested and found to be bad. a number of things lead up to causing it to die, terminal corrosion, extra wiring for lights & cb drawing power, and a ghetto rigged starter kill. check my question thread: http://therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52892

$190 vs. $250....

a press release I found from EnerSys states that they are making sears' platinum die hard series batteries and EnerSys also makes odyssey's batteries. cool beans. $60 bucks cheaper, a good odyssey battery (basically) and a local place that deals them so if something does go wrong you'll get same day exchange. I've finally had it with optima, I have had 2 red tops, one yellow and 2 blue tops and they have all failed except my starting red top in my pickup. I have been searching and found odyssey to be a far superior battery and that optima was bought by exide a few years ago which probably explains why their no longer any good. odyssey's only downfall was limited distribution, but now thats moot. who doesn't live near a sears?

I have the Sear's DieHard Platium in the Ranger. Compared to my last discount battery, its in a whole another world. The Diehard starts my little 4-banger with ease every time. And it could care less about the cold too. AGM, 4yr free replacement, Brass tin-coated terminals, and all the extra CCA (930 cca) to start even a diesel engine if need be. Thou the price was steep, $200+, but it was well worth it.

Always look around, since none of those places actually make batteries. They are just private labels on someone elses product. Die Hard isn't a manufacturer, only a brand.

BATTERY MANUFACTURERS AND BRAND NAMES LIST

Bill Darden

Last Updated on April 19, 2009

Battery manufacturers, distributors, or large chain stores will often private label their batteries, for example in the U.S., EverStart for Wal*Mart, DieHard for Sears and DuraLast for Auto Zone in the United States. The larger chain stores might have batteries with their private label made by several manufacturers depending on the location to reduce shipping costs or to provide more different types or sized of batteries. Below is a list in alphabetical order of the largest battery manufacturers, joint ventures, distributors, and dealers with some of their brand names, trademarks and private labels; hyperlinks to their Web addresses; and telephone numbers. The manufacturers are in bold type. Ownership, supply contracts, branding, Web addresses and telephone numbers are subject to change. For example:

* Johnson Controls acquired the automotive battery portions of Hoppecke, Varta, Bosch, Grupo IMSA, Delphi, is acquiring the automotive battery portions of Fiamm Group, and engaged in a joint venture with Shaft to manufacture Li-Ion hybrid batteries.

* Yuasa and Japan Storage Battery have merged as GS Yuasa

* EnerSys purchased Hawker, motive deep cycle battery portions of Fiamm Group, portions of Yuasa, and Leclanche SA.

* Douglas Battery is transistioning their automotive battery business into East Penn

The manufacturer's code number will be on the battery and is only sure way of identifying the manufacturer. Ask the dealer who made the battery. In the United States, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), can provide a useful source of information on the manufacturer of the battery. Manufacturers, joint ventures or distributors will sometimes have lines within a trademark or brand, for example, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, Premium, Heavy Duty, Commercial, Standard, Plus, Turbo, Calcium, Classic, Maintenance Free, etc., for differentiating quality, features or warranty periods. They will also contract with other manufacturers to build special purpose batteries and batteries to complete their product lines that are not economically feasible to build themselves. A good manufacturers cross reference list for Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) batteries can be found on the Battery Solutions Web site.

Trademarks, brand names and registrations are owned by their respective companies and are as shown below. Web addresses will often change, so you can use an Internet search tool like http://www.google.com, http://www.yahoo.com/, http://www.findownersearch.com/, etc. to locate the most current information. Other good sources of battery manufactures are BaSyTec's Hyperlink list at http://www.basytec.de/ or the membership list of Associations, Business Directories or Hyperlink Lists found in the Battery References Links List and Battery Information Links List at http://www.batteryfaq.org. Answers to Frequently Asked Questions, (FAQs) and additional information on car, motorcycle, truck, marine, and recreational vehicle starting and deep cycle lead-acid batteries can be found at http://www.batteryfaq.org/.

Tip: Use Ctrl-F to find a manufacturer's or brand name.

from what i have heard the optima batteries are not as good as they are made out to be. they only have a one year warranty as well. personally i have an interstate battery that has a 30 month free replacement warranty and a 85 month pro rated warranty.

what's the prob with optima, all my red tops lasted 5-7 years. I sell Interstate at the shop, have always had the best luck with them. Batteries are just like gas though.

Johnson Control makes most of the batteries sold in the Eastern half of the country. Not sure about the west.

I understand that, EnerSys is the place making the batteries for odyssey and now they are making the sears die hard platinum line of batteries. therefore it's safe to say that a "rebadged" odyssey (a quality durable battery line with a good rep) is being sold in your local sears store. same specs, same case, same manufacturer, different "paintjob". also, if i'm not mistaken from what I got off of that website Johnson control owns optima/exide? making my claim of "exide makes optima batteries now" somewhat true?

Johnson control makes a lot of batteries in around my area. Our shop use to carry the Engizer brand from Johnson Control, but keeping batteries in stock and having to make a certain amount to order was not working out. Then AAFES got a new contrat with Interstate and ordering has been great. Order what we want and there doesn't need to be a minimal limit. And the Interstate brand batteries seem to have a better test rating. Even thou Interstate batteries are also built be Johnson Control.
