Fuel leaking at top of tank when topped off

I topped off my fuel tank, which is how I normally fuel my truck. I heard and smelled fuel dripping under the truck. It was coming out at the top of the tank. It was not coming out where the nozzle goes in.

Can I just not top off my tank and drive this thing for a few more months? Is the leak from vandalism, the fuel pump or the filling hose?

It stopped dripping after a few minutes. It was coming out pretty fast, not a mere drip.

Ideas, cautions?

you may have a crack in you outer section of the fuel filler hose. there are 2 parts to the filler, the outer which slips over the nipple on the tank and also doubles as a vapor vent, and the inner hose which runs inside the vent hose and is connected to the back of the filler spout where the little metal fill door is. if you filled it full enough that the fuel went up the vent tube and met up with a crack, then that would explain your leak. your best bet is to crawl under there with a flash light and have a look at things. if you need a new one i believe www.DormanProducts.com has one that will fit.

i had the same thing happen on my truck, pull off the box, 1 wire harness to under, 3 bolts on the filler neck, and 6 55 torx bits on the box and youll see the cracks right at the base of the neck... common problem, there about 85$ to replace with an autozone or ebay one... there is also a chance it is the fuel pump, but the filler neck is a comom problem on these's things

Mines a 98, and I fill it until fuel seeps out of the filler hole. :>)
Never had this problem. Maybe I never will because it is constantly wet.:D

Is it okay to just not fill the tank and continue driving the truck? I'm hoping to sell it in February.

i would say so.. i left mine like that for 6 months, just only put 3/4s a tank rather then fill it, might lose a little milage per tank... but its not a huge deal i dont think

Similar fuel tank problem

Mine doesnt leak when fully filled, appears to be accumulating on top of tank when running but not when sitting. Truck is just 13k from 300k and I just want to get it there. Ideas?

Yeah the filler necks decay over time. It's easier (if your bed isn't rusty) to unbolt the bed and slide it back to access the tank than to mess with the straps.

Mine did the same thing, but my tank was melted for some reason.

Forgot to mention....

I'm getting longer crank times that tells me fuel may be running out of the supply hose and I have the problem even though the tank is below 1/2 full.
