Alright, this morning i went out to my uncles shop with my new intake kit. A K&N 77 series. ( http://www.autoanything.com/air-intakes/61A1913A0A0.aspx ). I waited to go to the shop to do it because his co-owner has a chassis dyno and i wanted to see what the kit did for the truck. We get it on and strapped down and do a couple pulls to make sure we had a good curve. All 3 very very close, basically on top of eachother like they should be. So we shut her down and change the intake, put the shiny new kit on. what happened when we did the second set of pulls surprised us all.
I'll let y'all know its a 03 4.0 5spd 4wd 4.10's and 265/70R16 new winterforce-which i know soak up some power. Otherwise completely stock.
Nobody expected to see the HP and Torque DROP. Yes it actually was lower than stock. Not a big difference but still, the curve was shifted to the left, which means less power in the useable rpm range. Just for fun we even turned the intake tube up and blocked off the engine heat so it was getting fresh cool air. The torque was also lower, worse than the HP. It dynoed at 150 HP. That shows how much the drivetrain takes away, and every car I've seen has had a very similar drop from what the factory rating is.
Pretty much K&N is getting a call about their HP gaurantee and I'm sending it back for a drop in replacement-that at least isn't $300 and retains factory power. I would not recommend buying this kit for a ranger although it is high quality components. Sorry to give y'all the news bout how much your intake doesn't do but, the dyno don't lie.
(And before the comments, the truck is actually black and was spotless 5 days ago. it's averaging 12 deg here so im not washing it to have it froze solid on me)

Good info. Make sure you follow up and tell us how much more often, if at all the K&N makes you have to clean off your maf sensor.

Thats strange. When I had my K&N intake on the 2.3L, it ran better on the top-end. But I don't run it anymore becuase of poor filteration of smaller particles.

Another thing I can sell.

I knew it.

I always wondered if on their "proven dyno sheets" if the difference was made by the stock run taken without a fan, and the k&n run was taken with a fan...

Dunno.

I can tell you from experience that manufacturers will dyno something stock, do some mods to it like exhaust, chip, etc. dyno it, then add the said component and say wow!! look what it did.....

My credo

it was probably the icy body that affected the K&N :icon_rofl:
good info man, that actually proves that the Ranger has a good intake on its own

I always knew those things were junk. I've seen them cause more problems than any other single mod ever.

I once saw a guy fix a Mustang with a rough run and lean codes by punching holes in a plastic grocery bag and putting it over the guys "High Performance" K&N intake filter. Smoothed right out and the fuel trims corrected to near 0 in about 10 seconds.
