Well To day I picked up this.

and it has this in it

that will be put in this

to replace this

but first I have to finish this for a friend of mine

The 67 Mustang is a long project, I'm doing all the metal work, I get practice on it with my new little welder, and it isn't costing me a thing to work on it.

The Explorer is a 92 and been ragged out on the inside, but the engine runs and doesn't smoke, the tranny is bad, all it has is reverse, no forward gears, that's those autos for you.

I'm going to try and get the engine out and get the Explorer strip of all the good parts before my wife kills me for taking up so much space in the drive way, I'm going to put the rear end from the Explorer in the Ranger, and if I can I'm going to try and trade the Explorers front axle for a set of drop beam for my Ranger, any body close want to do some trading, look me up.

I'm also going to look for me a 2wd 5 speed tranny for my Ranger since it is already a 5 speed, and I guess sell or trade the auto and transfer case for something, maybe a set of nice wheels.

Anybody know what all engine size trannys will fit the 4.0 ????

I really think I got a good deal, I traded a bunch of items that have been collecting dust for about 4 to 5 years and I wasn't going to be using them any time soon.

But what size engine's will bolt to the 4.0, I know the 2.3 5 speed won't fit, or at least I have been told it won't fit.

I know the 2.9 will fit, but what other size's will fit.

you can use a transmission from the 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 but like kyle m. said use the M50d is the best choice

That is what is in my Ranger now, but it's hooked to a 2.3, I'm going to head for Pull-A-Part later this month and see if I can find one.

If I can't find one, then I'll just have to fix the auto and put it in my truck, I would hate to, but a person has to do what a person has to do.

Thanks all, with the cold weather trying to set in, I think I'm going to take a page from Multiranger's play book, and polish the intake, I'm going to save up and while I have the engine out, put a gasket kit and a new oil pump in it.

The Explorer came from Alabama, and was left in Knoxville because the tranny gave out, the transmission shop had to keep it for a time before they could get rid of it, the inside has been trashed, but I think I can get the power seats recovered at a decent price from a friend of mine, I just have to buy the material to recover.

Well, since it was cold this morning, or at least my wife said it was, I started on taking the inside apart of the Explorer, It got me thinking, IF i put a 5 speed behind the 4.0, I would then have to find a 2wd 4.0 5speed CPU, so this is going to sound crazy and nuts, and as much as I would love to have a 5 speed, I'm going to leave the 4x4 auto trans behind the 4.0 and just not use the front of the trans case, this way IF for some stooped reason I need a granny 2wd, I can shift the trans in low.

I'm on a really really tight budget, so this would be the cheapest way for me to go.

If you replace the oil pump put the new Melling HV oil pump in it.. It is supposed to fix the lack of oil on the top end... I got mine for cheap on Ebay. So far as I could find Autozone was the only one with a part number but they were too expensive for my blood... Also if you want to lower is use the spindles from an 89 up and get the lowering beams to go with.. They are cheaper.. some year Ranger had twin piston brakes but you will neet that year spindle... Melling part number is M328....

You are welcome Sir. When I have a chance and extra cash I am going to go to u pull it and get the updraded brakes & spindle for when I am ready to do a brake job on mine again... You may wanna make sure of the axle ratio on the explorer before you go through the trouble of changing it out.. Anything lower than a 3:45 and a M50d in my oppinion will turn up the RPMs too high.
Remember the 4.0 torque band is low in the RPM range...

I got to looking at the rear ends of the Ranger and the Explorer while I was taking a break from blowing leaves from the yard, I won't need a axle flip kit on the Ranger when I put the axle from the Explorer in the Ranger, the Explorer is already on the bottom of the axle tube, as long as I don't have to cut the perches loose, I'm good to go on that part.

I have to go to Nashville on Tuesday for a doctors appointment, then I'll start hard and heavy on getting the Explorer tore down and the parts piled up in the garage.

Yesterday I did more work to the Mustang, I got the right rear quarter fender all cut out and the new welded in, the Wife was a little pissed saying it was to cold for me to be outside in the cold weather (50degrees) for such a long time.

For those that didn't know, seven years ago, I got a liver transplant, and I take medications to suppress my immune system so I don't reject the liver.:headbang:

I'll try and hurry up and get the Mustang out of the way so I can get my Little Ranger tore apart and start the rebuild.

my plans are to take every thing from the Explorer (Dash, Wiring harness, every thing) and put in the Ranger, I'm NOT going to use the front axle, so IF any one close wants to buy the front or trade, let me know:icon_thumby:.

Well... I went to start the Ranger up this morning and it wouldn't start:bawling:,,, I guess it has something to do with the starter laying on the ground :icon_confused:

and the fun begins :yahoo:

I will be removing all the "junk" in the engine bay, that also includes the complete wiring harness, and on the inside the dash get pulled also, plus the wiring harness from inside the cab.

the fun part is when I pull the 4.0, and very carefully remove the wiring harness, and the dash from the Explorer.
