and that's another thing, if you want the performance of AWD, but you are only thinking of putting a 2.9L in it, what would the point of AWD be?? The vehicle would not sustain enough drivetrain power to warrant the use of AWD...:dunno:

FoxBody Mustangs are of unibody design; there is no "take off" option other than removing the front sub-frame.
Ditto.

This project would require an unreal amount of work. And at the end of the day, you have a 2.9 V6 Mustang. Maybe I'm the only one who realizes this, but the 2.9 isn't exactly the star of Ford's lineup. My 4.0 is weak in 4 wheel drive. I can't imagine the 2.9 trying to get around a track as an AWD vehicle.

So I'm NOT the only one who realizes it =)

EDIT: You would also have to do some pretty excessive floorpan work to get a transfer case under that thing. It would most likely end up where the drivers seat is.

I have seen mustang bodies sitting on top of 4x4 frames, so it is possible, but to keep it low as an onroad track car (which is the direction you are leading us to believe), as stated above, would require quite a bit of fabrication...

I've seen that too.

I also believe he wants an onroad track car by this statement about your suggestion of putting it on an Explorer frame:

because that wouldn't weigh a ****load or anything

also, solid axles are a BAD thing, i'm not trying to make a rock crawler, i'm trying to make a track car, it has to corner.
I might have missed it, what axe are you going to run in the back of the Mustang?

Personally, I am wanting to get a 90-91 DSM (Plymouth Laser, Mitsubishi Eclipse or Eagle Talon) Not stuck on AWD but I wouldn't turn it down in the right car, I had a '90 Laser RS Turbo FWD a couple years ago and it wheeled and dealed quite well. Sold it when I got my F-150... kinda wish I had hung on to it. Last I heard that engine (4G63T) was what the Lancer EVO engines were based on.

It sounds like a neat (although very in depth project, if you are still open to suggestions you might give them a look. They have independant suspension and disc brakes all the way around, optional AWD, and an decent aftermarket to improve them. Give them a looksy, they are all the way around a neat little car IMO. :icon_thumby:

WHY DO I KEEP BUYING DODGES?!?!?
If you want a solid vehicle with four wheel drive look at AMC Eagles and Concordes since they'yre essentially a Jeep with a car body. If you want an all wheel drive vehicle look towards an Audi since they've probably done it best. Just sayin... Also, I dig how the SX/4 looks...

If you're REALLY looking for aproject that I think would be cool, swap a 3.0 vulcan into a tempo with AWD since BOTH were optional but didn't come together. Then you'd have a rock solid reliable vehicle with good traction, a factory 4WD setup with all independent suspension and it'd make a helluva sleeper. Or, Ive seen pictures of a turbo 2.3 OHC bolted to an MTX3 form an Escort sport dropped into a Tempo...

Did I mention I really like Tempos?

This ain't Europe. Importing parts ain't cheap.

I would ditch the 2.9 for a 4.0 in a heartbeat given the chance.

My thoughts exactly...But for a mustang, I'd do a 5.0L in a heartbeat, seeing how that's what they came with :icon_thumby:

Bada bing. It would be much easier to turn a Fox Body with a 302 into a track car by modifying the suspension than doing the whole 2.9 deal.

So were you hoping to - in addition to finding that AWD driveline - find one of the OHC 2.9's from a Merkur Scorpio or something? They do exist in the US, but I can honestly say I've only ever seen ONE, and I was like "what the hell is a Scorpio?" because I was maybe 12 years old, and I've never seen one since.

If you want an AWD Ford youre pretty much stuck with Aerostar, Tempo, or Explorer.

the stock 302 in 80s fox mustangs were utter garbage, i'd take a worked 2.9 over them any day, especially considering the 2.9 IS the powerplant that drives the all wheel drive system that is in the car i planned on taking parts off of for the conversion.

That's pretty bold. You obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about.
