If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
a 6.2/6.5 will fit in any hole a 350 will. will bolt to any transmission a 350 will. to do a 4bt swap you still need a GM transmission (I know some ford applications are rumored to exist but the GM app is far easier to find) and a 4bt will not make the power a p400 optimizer will....... there is a guy on DTR that is running 303rwhp and 597 rwtq out of his 6.5TD.

for fuel mileage you will be $$$$$ ahead buy doing the 4bt swap or a merc TD or ....... even a TDI swap is possible.

Rumored???!!?!??! :icon_confused:

Thats a Ford small block bolt pattern ZF behind a 4BT (in an '96 Explorer frame). Thats a factory adapter found on most step vans with a manual trans. (Most auto's were GM TH400, most sticks were Ford T-19s.)

The stock transmission could handle the power, however I doubt it will bolt up. From what little I know Cummins use a common bellhousing pattern. Again from what little I know you should be able to bolt up a dodge Cummins transmission to it.

:icon_rofl::icon_rofl: Can the stock trans hold up to the Cummins?!? :icon_rofl::icon_rofl:

The Th400 could barely hold up to the Cummins.

The swap hasnt really been hard, but I havent even dropped it in the truck yet, so we'll see. If you can use a tape measure, welder, and hand tools, you should be able to do the swap. OH, yeah, you need to have an extra $4-5000 sitting around.

As far as bolting up. Cummins makes adapters for Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and SAE. They prob make others too, but almost anything (small block or bigger)can be mated to the 4bt/6bt with a stock or aftermarket adapter.

Just saying the 4b only puts out ~150 hp and ~300tq, not much different than putting a 302 in front of the M50D.

Personally I wouldn't waste the money getting an adapter but in theory it should hold up.

If the room is there why not use a dodge cummin's transmission? Easy to find, and should mate up without any adapters.

Yes, an M5OD-R2 will hold up ok to a stock 4BT. The 4bt does tend to eat little transmissions once you go fiddling with the injection pump and turn up the power. However the stock 5r44e thats comes behind the 2.5l, which he has, will not hold up.

They ALL take adapters. You cant bolt ANY trans to the back of the block.

These are all good points.

I may have been misinformed, I was under the understanding all Cummins shared the same bolt pattern.

They do (for the most part), but that pattern is an 8 bolt "christmas tree" pattern behind the flywheel. You need the flywheel housing or "adapter" to mate it to the trans you want to use.

Here's the back of a Cummins without a flywheel or adapter. As you can see, it would be hard to bolt any trans on there with a flywheel housing.:

Ok thanks for the info. I've had dreams of doing an engine swap and as much as I like diesel this confirms the ease of putting a 302 in mine.

You can make a TH400 hold up to anything. They can take 2,500hp, properly built. They are smooth and quick shifting trannies--used in heavy, powerful Rolls Royces and aircraft tugs--not to mention those front-drive GMC motorhomes, military Hummers and who knows what else. The tranny in my truck is the last thing I worry about when I go on a trip--and my trailer weighs 5,500# empty. If you hurt a TH400 with a stock 4BT, you did it by letting all the oil run out--or by using a 500 year-old tranny without popping it apart and looking in.

Transmissions are derated by a shock factor when installed behind engines with few cylinders. Engines with more cylinders run at a higher frequency and are smoother. A 4BT is a rough runner, especially being a diesel, compared to the engines that came in front of an M50R2. Even stock I think it would hammer it pretty good.

The 302 is only easy because everyone has done it. Try something new.
4BT swaps are not exactly rare either, there was a 1950's pickup with one at the local car show last summer...

The 302 is easy because there are tons of parts are out there to do it and the engine is in a friendlier shape. The RBV engine bay is more limited in length and height than width.

Not too many bread trucks at u-pull-it, tons of Explorer's, F-150's, Broncos and cars of any description with V8's.

I think the GM V8's would be pretty easy too, roughly the same size and shape and parts availabilty.
