I was wondering if anyone has ever tried putting friction modifier in any ford power steering, it makes sense to me but I want to know if someone tried this and it works

There are different types of friction modifiers
For limited slip differentials , posi-traction, they decrease friction which allows the clutches to slip when going around a corner

For an automatic trans they increase friction to limit slipping

At one time Ford did recommend adding the differential type friction modifier to its power steering pumps to reduce noise

Try the K&W trans-X posi-trac additive, your store should carry that

it only takes a few posts from RonD to know that his wizardry is unparalleled.

How much would you use in a PS pump, and would it be useful on my 93?
Fact is I have some leftover from a recent rear end rebuild just sitting on the shelf

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times... use placenta for power steering fluid.

On a less serious note, I'm sure Ron knows but wouldn't a friction modifier made for transmission use be better than that used for differential use since the power steering system is using ATF and not gear oil?

No, you want less friction in power steering pump not more

Ford power steering pumps are just noisy, Ford deals with that by installing A VOLUME KNOB on every radio they install in every vehicle, never seen a Ford radio without a volume control, now you know WHY :)

On newer models they even moved it to THE STEERING WHEEL, point made, lol

Last time I flushed my power steering system I filled it up with mercon v that I had previously mixed with lubeguard red when I flushed my transmission. Not because I thought it would help or hurt, I was just too cheap to buy more mercon. I dont think lubeguard red is actually a friction modifier but my pump seemed quieter than with previous flushes. :dunno:

But yea... they make noise. I'd be more worried when a ford PS pump STOPPED making noise. Because it probably fell off.
