Would this combo work for a 302 swap

96 explorer 5.0l with a FORD F150 4.2l PICKUP 96-04 MT; (5 speed), Mazda (Toyo Kogyo manufactured), 4x4 into a 96 ford ranger? Any other tips with this combo gladly accepted. Also i was searching junkyards for a transmission, it says all these transmissions below are interchangeable is this true?

The 5.0 / 96-04 4.2l f150 trans will work fine. This combo is supposed to put the shifter closer to the stock position than any other options. You will have to drill the bellhousing holes out for the slightly larger bolts. (M10 to 7/16ths)

Interchangeable transmissions can be a bit complicated

Engines have a Bolt Pattern that is used for a transmissions Bell Housing

5.0l(302) uses small block V8 pattern also called Windsor pattern, but same pattern was used on inline 6's and V6's, not just V8's
4.2l V6 also used Windsor pattern
So transmission from 1996-2004 4.2l V6 will fit, bolt to, a 5.0l(302) V8
Yes 4.2l used Metric bell housing bolts, 5.0l used SAE, so 4.2l bell housing holes need to be enlarged by 1/16th inch

Transmission are made in 2WD and 4x4 versions, usually conversion between the two is possible but you have to find the 2WD or 4x4 parts, which means a 2WD or 4x4 transmission so.................cost wise it doesn't make sense in most cases to convert a transmission this way

Automatics require full tear down to convert, so even more cost than manual conversions

Many manual transmissions have a detachable bell housing, all automatics do.
A transmission "model" is just that, a model it doesn't tell you what "options" it has
i.e. For sale: 2000 Ranger..................................?? is it regular cab or extended, 2WD or 4x4, 4cyl or V6
All 2000 Rangers were the same "model" but its not enough information to make a buying decision

Ford F250 is a "model", you see Manual trans and 4x4, but.....................what engine, what bell housing does transmission have?
1990 F-250 had 5 engine options, so 5 different bell housings but the same "model" transmission
