New here, as I mostly do ls swaps and gm applications. I had a customer come to me to finish a swap he had some one els start, and we all know how it is going behind others wiring projects.

To start it's an 82 ranger originally 2.9
Original rangerb5 speed
2000 explorer 4.0 and harness.
And 96 computer (not sure if ranger or explorer)
To me, it sounds easier to make the 4.0 harness standalone, but information on this seems scarce.
I have identified, the pcm pinouts are yellow for constant, red for switched, and blk/w for ground.
The only thing I can't find a pinout for Is the 42 pin connector on the driver side valve cover. Any help here would be appreciated.

Not sure how I could help but to say that any 1982 Ranger wouldn't have been a 2.9 originally..

I may be wrong on the year, or wrong that it was a 2.9. But I am 100% it's a 00 explorer motor, harness and 96 computer

Well you are at least wrong on the year because the 82 Ranger doesn't exist. 83 was the first year.

Yes, that system is fairly easy to make it work as a stand-alone. UNLESS, it has the security system. That is probably why you have a 96 computer, that would pre-date the PATS system in the Explorers.

Assuming it did have a 2.9 you can re-work the original injector harness to stay and work with the 4.0 alternator. It will have an extra plug (the big rectangle one with two or three heavy wires won't be used) and you need to add a cable to the 4.0 alternator for the big stud to put power back into the system.

The powers and grounds to the EEC system are basically as you described.

You will also need to modify the wiring of the starter, since the 2.9 had a 1-wire starter and the 4.0 uses a 2-wire starter.

Ok, it's an 84 originally 2.8. I have it to where I can crank it, and when I turn the power on I can hear the iac valve or some other electronic humming around the intake area. But it's not getting any spark.

I think if I had a proper pin out for the 42 pin connector on the driver side valve cover I could get it going, all the pinouts I find only have color/number but dosnt state where the wire goes.

I think I'm not powering the coils or injectors unless the main power on the 42 pin connector powers the coils and injectors and any thing els that needs power.

I'll be working on this today, and if some one tells me what wires are needed to make it standalone I'll paypal them $25.

Ok, I got fire at the plugs now by hooking power directly to the coil + (red and white stripe, possibly grey stripe) now to find out if the injectors are firing.

How do you wire something when you dont know what parts you're wiring? :icon_confused:

The fuel pressure on a 2000 4.0 runs at 65psi, the 2.9 runs at 35psi and they use completely different systems.

I'm just trying to figure out how to make this harness standalone, with out having to trace every wire down. He knows what parts he needs to make every thing els work, he just dont like wiring. I figured it couldn't be much more trouble than LS stuff, my only problem is finding the pinouts on the 42 pin connector on the driver side valve cover.

Its running, has been for a bit.
Only to run into problem 2, the clutch wont disengage. Even if I press the clutch fork in by hand with a pry bar. Clutch pressure plate and fly wheel are all new. Any ideas?
