Hi guys,
Do any of you know about a shift controller for my ranger? I intend to diesel swap,
But would like to stick with the auto. I have seen the controllers the have been used on 4l60 diesel swaps, and was curious if there is anything for the ranger / explorer trans. Thanks guys

The 4r/5r can barely handle the torque from a 4.0 v6.... even if by some miracle you found a way to mate it to a diesel, it would be dead in 5 minutes.

Excuse me while I spend 43 minutes laughing... the 55e version exists because the 44e couldn't handle the amazing power of the 4.0 v6. It's a small engine transmission made for extremely light duty. Dont know where you got those numbers but even if you found a bell housing to mate it to a diesel, it would be destroyed in minutes.

Ok,
Fine, regardless, the engine I would be looking to use have no more than 250 ft. lbs. of torque. Anyways,
Bake to the main subject. Does anyone know of a shift controller?

I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
From what I've read I believe the 44 and 55 are newton-meters. 440nm and 550nm shock loads...
(325 and 405 lb-ft)
They won't hold up to any diesel worth installing in a Ranger.

no.....thats some convoluted gheyyass bullshit rating....

the tq rating 550 pounds is post converter. divide the number by 2.2 and you have input torque....which is 250.

then there is the pulsation dynamic of the diesel which the converter generally gobbles up. for a minute anyway.

at 250.. its a decent roll of the dice.

there are no standard controllers for this particular unit like the 4l60....

for the 4r55....using a diesel makes piggybacking a bit difficult as you will need to custom program for the new inputs. because the normal programming wants some info....but i have not done it with the 4r55 yet. i have with the 4r100...e4od and 4r70 with workable results.....carb and efi applications.

i am a ways from the 4r55 adaption ... once i have that walked thru i will be able to directly instruct on whether or not its feasible.

oh....if the engine you want to use has a gm adapter....

use the gm transmission. preferably the 4l80.

the a4ld 4r55 in any form is the biggest pos ever created.

Ok,
How hard would it be to swap a Gm 4l60 / 80 in? I know they both use a shifter cable, that there are shift controllers, and that the crossmember and drive shaft would have to be modified. Has anyone done it?

you nailed it on the head. tons of people have put 4l60 and 80s in rangers behind ls motors. a 4l80e can be converted to a full manual valve body. a 4l60 can not.

Have a look here for a stand-alone shift controller: https://www.usshift.com/

You will want one that is tuneable for a diesel's power band, I know, DUH, but just saying

Are there any threads here on doing the tranny swap?
