Help. I keep finding conflicting information from the Ford dealership, to hear on the forums. I have been lurking for a few years, and this is my 2nd 1986 Ranger w/ 2.9L. My truck is XL model, and I belive it is a Mitsubishi FM145 according to the Trans Code on the driver door. So I thought it took gear oil, and a couple years ago the whole tranny took a dump on me, shifter and all, after doing tranny oil change. A local mechanic who is an old head been working on rigs for 40+ years said to use ATF. BUt here on the forum is says 80-90 weight. I've been running ATF the last few months, and have done a lot of work to the truck overall.

FM series transmissions use 80W90 gear oil. FM series transmissions have a square pan on the bottom.

M5OD transmissions ATF. M5OD transmissions have a round bottom.

Don't put ATF in an FM, nd don't put gear oil in an M5OD, bad things happen.
