I had a local shop rebuild the pump for me. He only replaced what was absolutely required and it still came to over $700CAD. Unfortunately the bosch VE series pump is a pricy devil despite its relative similarity to the stanadyne DB2 (like what my 1986 F250 has). It is more advanced with adjustible fuel aneroid (this changes the fuel delivery map to respond dynamically to the turbo boost) and a thermal compensator to dynamically adjust cold idle RPM and timing advance. Over all the ranger engine is much more advanced then the 6.9 full size pickup engine that was available at the same time. Not that I could ever part with my F250!
In my situation, the pump case had to be machined to accept a bushing insert as he described it. I wasn't there to see the work get done though. The throttle shaft also snapped when they tried to take it apart so that had to get replaced too.
Technically, the pump used on these mitsubishi engines is called a "nippondenso" and thats what it will say on the side of it. However, the design is virtually identical to the bosch VE rotary distributor style injector pump that is found in earlier volkswagen diesels (among many makes from that era) and I think it was - and still is - built by the denso brand under license from bosch. Bottom line is any diesel injection shop will have the tools, parts and facility to service this pump even though the engine in this application is rare. If they can rebuild a bosch VE pump off a cummins 12 valve, they can rebuild this one too. Your only real challenge will be finding a shop that can be trusted.
A seal kit can be purchased on Ebay if you feel like trying it on your own. Worst case senario, the engine will scream past redline and self destruct if you get it wrong on assembly and try to run it. I know of some guys that have done basic rebuilds on their bosch VE pumps but even if it wasn't for the risk, there may be problems found in there that are beyond your ability to solve. Getting spare parts from bosch is also very difficult and even dealers can sometimes have problems I found out.
Lowest price I ever saw for rebuild kit for this engine was $600 but that was from mainland china on Ebay........not happening!
An australian site did have a more believable price closer to $1000AU but that included all sorts of goodies including cylinder sleeves. This engine is dry sleeved from factory, but can be rebored at least once before replacement of the sleeves are needed from what I found. Wishing I did that when I rebuild this one.
I am in driving distance of these guys and their prices are great, but I never asked for a price on a complete engine kit:
