thank you both for that thorough explanation.
Out of curiosity, do you have a 4.0 ohv/sohc?

If so (I've never owned one, just watched friends replace head gaskets ?), are they plastic or aluminum plenums/intakes?

Yes... and it is dead. Bent valve after blowing a head gasket.
Hua, and I have two running 2.9s.... ??

I will say that since getting into the Ford stuff, I've seen some impressive builds done to the 3.0. Mostly via forced induction and nitrous. They seem to be able to handle a LOT of abuse before deciding to peace out.

I'll probably submit a tech article on this when I'm done.

In the meanwhile, in order to adapt the Scorpio intake, you'll need throttle position sensor 86 TF-9N 989-AD and Standard Motor Products S-745 connector / pigtail.

The original Ranger TPS sensor and pigtail on my 1988 did not fit, nor the ones off my 1986 throttle body.

4.0 OHV had both plastic and aluminum. They started out aluminum in 1990, the Rangers changed to plastic in 93, the Explorers in 95. The lower was always aluminum.

The SOHC was always plastic, upper and lower, but there were a few different styles between different years and vehicles.

Interesting. Guessing Tue plastic intakes were done for heat dissipation/cost cutting?

Finally found a partial Scorpio intake throttle cable bracket.

@PetroleumJunkie412 I know you've been running this setup for a while now. Do you have enough info to share for a tech article. Parts needed? Benefits? Pros/Cons? Any gain in performance? Mileage?

Torque curve moves up in rpms, much better throttle response, seat o the pants dyno says "improvement." have half the tech section article done ?

Parts list wasn't too bad. Bolts and throttle cable were hardest to find, but I probably should have a custom throttle cable made - ranger one is incompatible, and merkur one is a few inches too long.

Jeff Herston over at Merkur Parts Midwest had everything in stock I needed save for the bolts; those and the matching gasket washers came from River City Fastener on ebay.

It's absolutely worth doing. 2.9s rely on revs to make power, and the twin snorkel intake frees up the intake side. Saw an average 12% increase in volumetric efficiency across the board with the merkur vs ranger intake manifold.

I really want to hit a dyno with both in hand to see the difference. Hopefully summer when it's out of hibernation.
