2.5L ('98-'01) 2001 2.5 L head replacement

I was looking at ordering a head for my 2.5 and all the parts places specify a 6 mm or 8 mm thermostat housing bolt. Now common sense tells me this would be shank size. But ordering parts from places can be a fickle thing. I removed one of the bolts and it is an 8 mm head with a 6 mm shank so that doesn’t help my rule anything out other than as I said common sense dictates to me shank size. Anyone have any input?

I would assume they are asking for shank size. That is what is on the labels when you buy a bolt from a hardware store.

My understanding of bolt sizing is based on shank size rather than the size of the wrench or socket needed to tighten or loosen it.

For metric, they listed as M4, M6, M8, and so on. You also need to match the thread pitch. 1.00, 1.25, and so on. If you don't know what the thread pitch is supposed to be, you can take a bolt to a hardware store and either match it with bolts in stock or with a tool they have for that purpose. They might even have what you need with the right style of bolt head.
