My 2008 FX4 automatically started. No person on board' key not in ignition. Had to pull fuel pump breaker to kill motor. Any ideas?

My credo
Lead follow or get out of my way
Mine did that yesterday.

My key fob... if in my pocket will sometimes get pushed and will remote start.

How many miles on your vehicle?
Stock? Do you have a remote starter?
Did the starter motor turn on or had you just shut it down hot?

+1^^^^

You have a Remote Start installed, maybe you didn't known that, but its there

Google: 2008 Ford Ranger remote start

You will see the kits available
Can be part of an Alarm System

But it is odd the engine didn't turn off when you unlocked the doors and opened the hood
Remote Starts won't work unless doors are Locked, and if engine is running it should turn off if doors are unlocked/opened or if brake pedal is pressed, this prevents THEFT of running engine vehicle

The key was in the truck, but not in the ignition. Doors closed but not locked.
To kill the engine, I pulled the fuel pump relay from the fuse/ breaker/ relay box under the hood, (left rear).
When reinserted, the engine attempted to start, so I disconnected the battery ground . After about a 10 minute wait, reconnected and replaced the fuel pump relay. Everything normal now.

That's if it's properly installed, who knows how it could be installed.

I'm sure you've seen some stereo or other electrical devices installed that made you wonder how it didn't catch fire.
