Looking to buy my first Ranger so I'm searching for a super-basic truck.
Wanna take it to the bigbox stores and teach my kids how to drive in it, so here are my requirements for the ideal truck:
- 2009/2010/2011 Ranger
- standard cab (2 door, not extended)
- 4cyl/manual transmission (no automatics)
- 4x2 (I won't go offroading with this and the few ads I've seen all seem to double the price for the 4x4)
- less than 100k miles
- prefer truck in mid-atlantic but will travel for right (and right priced) truck.

So what's out there? Anyone have a friend or older relative/neighbor with one of these "throwaway" trucks they don't need anymore?
Thanks.

I believe your estimates on the 4x4 price is in-accurate, in fact, mine wasn't even listed as a 4x4 simply because the light wasn't coming on.
A $100 part and it was an official 4x4

Ha. Good luck. Been shopping for a 06-11 x-cab 4x4 M/T. Expect $10k+

Between the death of the manual transmission and the death of the small pickup, they're now in demand, and you'll pay a premium.

Junkie,
I think that's an accurate (although unfortunate) assessment. I've seen a few clean standard cab manual transmission Rangers listed at dealerships and even 4x2 truck prices seem to be a $3k-$5k more than "bluebook" because that's "market value." I was really hoping that by looking for the most barebones version of a Ranger I would find a cheap and clean one but no luck...

Fyi... there were no 4x4 4 cylinder trucks after 2000.

Honest advice? Find a clean 1983-1996.

Obd 1, cheap to fix, and $300-3000 (all in) for pretty much whatever you'd want. Lots of engine options throughout those years from a torque-y or revvy V6, to n/a and turbo diesels. Carb and efi.

Plus, if a kid bangs one up, fenders are $50 from raybuck, bumpers are $80, and wood bedsides are dead sexy if they hammer it too hard.

Nobody expects a Ranger to be perfect. I mean, they're Rangers.

If you keep em clean and do yearly rust maintainence, they'll outlive you.

My 88 is my daily. By far best vehicle I've ever owned.

Dirtman, thanks for the info, now I don't need to specify 4x2 in my search fields.

Petroleumjunkie412, I originally had a similar thought when I mentioned to my wife that I thought about getting something like my old '72 D100 /6-4spd and she immediately jumped on the safety bandwagon about kids not riding/driving a truck with no airbags, crumple zones, abs, etc. My suggestion of not getting in an accident and therefore not needing to worry about any of that stuff didn't help. The 2008-2011 trucks are old enough now that they're showing up in pick-n-pulls so factory-painted color-matching body parts are available if the kids bump something.

BTW, I don't wanna give folks the wrong impression; when I say "clean" I just mean it's presentable, it doesn't look like someone ran it in a demolition derby or it's not a rustbucket; I don't have an expectation/requirement to find a scratch-free truck...

I have a 2009 Ford Ranger XL (2.3 I4 Duratec, 5-speed manual-transmission, rear-wheel drive, and click trim with vinyl flooring and manual window-cranks. Although, it is a super cab and has 119k miles; being in very good condition, it is listed at $4,600.
