2V 4.6 into a 2010 2wd Ranger

I have a 2010 4.0L SuperCab Sport that I would like to swap in a 2V 4.6 CVPI engine and transmission into.. I know it's much easier to do a pushrod 5.0, but I'm up for the challenge... are there any successful swaps out there? I'd like to pick your brain...

Biggest issue is physical room...a 4.6 is about the same dimensions as a 460

Although it has been done, there are really a lot better options. The 4.6 is absolutely huge when compared to the more common V8s thrown into a ranger, like the 302, and 5.3/6.0 LS truck motors. Just take a look at this 4.6 next to a 302.

So what does this mean? A lot more fitment issues, and a lot more custom fabricating. It can be done, but expect to completely modify your front subframe, steering assembly, and the 4.6’s exhaust route significantly.

Not to mention you have possibly the most difficult chassis to swap with, post 04 has the digital cluster, 2010 had traction control, and all sorts of electronic gizmos that will need to be completely rewired or even redesigned/removed to get a 4.6 working. But, I just say this to let you know what’s involved. The mod motor 4.6 2V sounds so good, and would be BADASS in a ranger. Just be weary of what you are getting yourself into.

FYI the DOHC 4.6 is almost 4.5 inches wider than the SOHC 4.6. Still not as skinny as the 302, but about the same width as the 460

Im not sure an old standby like a 302 would be the best option in a 2010 anyways. The wiring and PATS would be a nightmare, along with gauges and speedo, not to mention if you have emission testing youre tottally screwed.

Id none of that ia an issue for the OP id look at a hot 351 over a 4.6

I ALMOST ended up with a 2.3 mustang instead of the bronco.

My coworker who has a big bad 5.7 challenger (that he can't stop raving about) said the exact same thing (barf) when I brought that up
.. got a big smug look on his face and laughed..

When I told him the mustang is a tenth of a second quicker to 60 he lost that smug ass attitude real quick lol.

not so fast Rusty, the 2.0 Ecoboost in my 2019 Edge is a great combination.
a 2011 Ranger would be 1000 lbs lighter, and the 2.3 has more power.
with Duratecs being all aluminum it makes Rangers light up front and quite nimble.

My boss has the 2.3 EcoBoost Mustang. That exhaust note is horrible.

An old 2.3 turbo from the 80’s can be a bad little motor. Before I got my Ranger 5.0 (which is pretty nice) I had a 90 Mazda B2300i (no so nice) with a 2.3 from a turbo coupe. I had a PimpX standalone ecu from stinger & it was awesome. The truck was rough & I didn’t get it dialed in 100% but with a t5 & 3.90 rear end it was quick. I’d love to have one in a nicer truck & they are bolt in for a ranger. The Pimpx with auto tune was sweet.

Its still a 4 cylinder.

Im sure its great but...its a 4 cylinder.
