I have a1993 Ranger with 3.0 engine. Sometimes when starting with a warm engine it wants to flood. I have to push the pedal down for it to start. Seem to be getting worse. Any ideas where to look for a problem.

If the engine has an engine coolant temp sensor (ECT) then it might be defective, telling the ECU that the engine is cold so add fuel.

You can test them for proper resistance. Other possibility is leaking injector that drips after shut down. Fuel pressure test will point to this.

I had the same problem for over a year and it got to the point of the truck rarely starting so I took it in and had the fuel pump and fuel filter changed and now it starts up every time.

You can always do a fuel pressure test to see if its getting enough fuel to the engine. I know that you said the engine would be flooded basically when trying to start it multiple times. Same thing was going on for me.

Try clicking your key on without starting the truck and see if you can hear your fuel pump click on.Just from my experience my fuel pumped still clicked on but it wasnt working properly anymore because it was 27 years old.

So id have to say definitely take your truck down to get it tested for a bad fuel pump. Make sure when ordering a new one that you get the proper fuel pump for your truck cause if you have a extended cab ranger the pump is different.

What was your verdict? I’m having similar problems.
1991 3.0 ranger
Cold truck starts fine. Runs fine.
After it’s warm it won’t restart unless you pull the fuel pump fuse and get rid of the flooding issues then it will start.
I’ve cleaned the injectors, Replaced fuel pressure regulator. Fuel pump
Its getting to much fuel.
Would a “hotter” spark plug help getting it to fire?

Have you tested/changed the ECT sensor as was listed as a possible cause?

Ok dumb question. There is a “sender” and a “sensor”. One has a stud on the back and one has the plastic plug. Which one is which or do I replace both?

Sensors have two wires as there is a 5 volt input through a resistor to the signal wire to the ECU, The sender is grounded to the body with only one wire and is your heat gauge . You want the two wire with plastic plug. You can OHM the sensor at full hot engine to compare to spec. Or you can just replace it if you think it's not too expensive.
