Anybody out there running 3" exhaust on their 3.0's? I've been seeing this White Ranger in traffic and was certain it had a V8 swap from the sweet sound that was coming from those chrome tips. The truck really scoots too, as it was hard to catch up to him in my DD Toyota Crapolla. So after several attempts to flag him down, I finally got him this morning. I could see Recaro buckets through the back glass, furthering my suspicion of a V8. After me drooling:drool: over his truck ( we are at a red light btw) I asked him if he did the swap. He looked SOOO confused:dunno:
He said it's a V6.
Me - "Oh 4.0 Huh?"
him - No 3.0.
Me - man that thing sounds like a V8
him - It's because of the 3" exhaust.
Me - Well done.
Sometime in there he said his uncle had a couple of FOX bodies and he wanted to get one of those motors eventually.
Light turned green and he rolled away:3gears:
2wd White Single cab GenII Ranger with Black Mustang wheels (the ones that look like the "old" Craigar style). Long chrome tips that bend out behind the rear wheels. everything was very clean and he drives the piss out of it everyday.

It might sound good but what did it do to the power numbers? There is a limit on how big you can go before horsepower and torque suffer. Not that the 3.0 is a fast engine to begin with....

If you don't care about performance and only care about sound, a 3" pipe can work. I would not even run 3" pipes on my stock 428 CJ powered 69 Fairlane Cobra. It would take a lot of performance engine improvements to require 3" exhaust pipes.

500 hp if they went past the bumper would definitely help with 3 in.....bet it would drop underhood 20 degrees helping combat vapor lock....

is it that hard to get 500 out of a cj?

yeah that was facetious...

but, 3 in on a 3.0 low sounds like v8 stuff... an exotic v8 no less.....its weird.

then they floor it at 40 mph to pass.....and a half hour later....after they gave up on passing.... everyone around them turned ghey from the noise it was making...

also facetious..

:thefinger::thefinger: four thumbs up for the 3.0!

Doesn't seem to slack in performance. Then again I don't know how much was 3". Sounded great though.

I've been accused of having a V-8 under the hood of my Ranger as well. Don't though. Just have no muffler, and a "bent Y" attached to the converter with two tips in front of the rear wheel. Pulled up to a friends shop one day, and his Dad asked me what size V-8 was under the hood. Told him 3.0 V-6. He said, sounds awesome.

Mine runs pretty good too. Have a MAC intake with a full size tube from the MAF to the TB. Lugs a little when the rpm's are low, but once they get up there, it rolls pretty nicely. The JET chip on the computer adds fuel, timing and shifts the transmission higher in the rpm range.

In the pic below, the large turndown tips are no longer there, just two straight out pipes.

Yep, the Engine Masters crew did a test on this theory on Youtube. They proved that most engines, even V8's, don't often benefit from anything larger than 2.5" exhaust.

Here is a clip of the above exhaust with a new dynomax replacement muffler just installed:
